Static Design

These two works demonstrate my knowledge of 2 dimensional design principles. The first piece was created during my first semester in Interactive Design and Media Applications, taught by Professor Fu. The second project was created for Prof Merrick Henry's Graphic Design class, Typography Studio 1.

PROJECT ONE:

Circular Backgammon

ITGM 705 - Introduction to Interactive Entertainment
Professor Suanne Fu
1st Quarter - Fall 2005

The project was to alter the gameplay of a traditional game, adding a dimension of complexity to it. I chose to take the game backgammon, which is traditionally played between two players on a rectangular game board, and create an 'in the round' experience where two, four or even eight players can play. The traditional backgammon board can be stretched out onto a line where players have their own 'home' or 'safe' areas and the goal is move all of your pieces into your home area, capturing your opponents stray pieces, which generally are on your side of the board.

By wrapping the path of the game back onto itself and doubling the length, I found that if I added another two players to the board, each player would have a home 'quadrant'. And instead of having a problem where the circular board makes the concept of securing your home area impossible, with a good strategy, you can take advantage of controlling a moving region where you can capture opponents in their territories. Also, by making the game circular, you need to watch out as opponents move in all directions, searching out their home area.

PROJECT TWO:

South Jack Five - Poster & Postcard

RGSD 705 - Typography Studio 1
Professor Merrick Henry
3rd Quarter - Spring 2005

For this project, Prof Henry had us each design and create our own font, and display that font on a doublesided postcard and full-size poster. I chose to create a stylized version of my handwriting and create a typeface out of it. Though in the class we never actually went through the steps of creatign an actual font file, we created both a mailer and a display poster to showcase our newly created typeface.

The following is an excerpt from my creative design brief for this project:

"I chose this method because I have secretly (not very) wished for a font of my handwriting forever. Many of the handwriting fonts are either over the top stylized (as in some of the graffiti handstyle fonts) or are kidlike and cartoonish. My handwriting is very standard, and has visual elements from graffiti, but is (I feel) very legible at all sizes."
