Mysterious apt on 5th ave being made into a film?

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Here’s the original, unbelievable, article at the NYT from 6/12.

That got Mr. Clough, who is the sort of person who has a brainstorm on a daily basis, thinking about children and inspiration and how the latter strikes the former. “I’d just read something about Einstein being inspired by a compass he’d been given as a child,” he said. The Einstein story set Mr. Clough off, and he began to ponder ways to spark a child’s mind. “I was thinking that maybe there could be a game or a scavenger hunt embedded in the apartment — that was the beginning,” he said.

And here’s the BLDGBLOG entry from yesterday.

— finally, the mystery on 5th Avenue will soon be a film directed by J.J. Abrams; BLDGBLOG would happily serve as a script consultant…

FCC revises method for determing broadband

Monday, June 16th, 2008

This is definitely going to alter the statistics, but it’s about time. It’s also great to have a new scale to determine speeds in the US. Here is the new classification:

* “First Generation data:” 200 Kbps up to 768 Kbps
* “Basic Broadband:” 768 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps
* 1.5 Mbps to < 3.0 Mbps
* 3.0 Mbps to < 6.0 Mbps
* 6.0 Mbps to < 10.0 Mbps
* 10.0 Mbps to < 25.0 Mbps
* 25.0 Mbps but < 100.0 Mbps
* 100.0 Mbps and beyond

Taking It Easy on Granny’s PC: Technical Complexity Is Driving a Return to Simplicity

Web design has experienced a sort of arms race in recent years. As agencies and brands vie to demonstrate their digital prowess, websites have become showier. You know the kind. Audaciously long pre-loaders and processor-punishing animations are now the cost of entry into the interactive elite. Sometimes the pomp is warranted and other times it’s just showing off. The quality of the experience is the test. I suspect that much of the time the audience doesn’t care as much as the agency does.
